BREAKING: Fubara loses as court nullifies passage of Rivers 2024 budget

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, voided and set aside the presentation and passage of Rivers State 2024 budget by a group of four-member legislators in the State. The court in a judgment delivered by Justice James Omotoso ordered the governor of the State, Siminalaye Fubara to represent the budget to the legally constituted House of Assembly under the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule. James Omotoso quashed the withholding of the House of Assembly fund on the ground, declaring that he has no constitutional power to do so. The court restrained Governor Fubara from frustrating the House of Assembly under Amaewhule from sitting or interfering in the affairs of the House. The redeployment of the Clerk and the Deputy Clerk done by the Governor was declared null and void and was set aside. Two Motorcyclists Killed in Lagos After Riding Against Traffic Despite Sanwoolu's Stern Warning

  A tragic accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Saturday has claimed the lives of two motorcyclists, raising concerns about the dangers of riding against traffic. The incident comes just weeks after Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his fears about the reckless behavior of some motorcyclists and vowed to crack down on violators. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred near Barracks Bus Stop, the same location where Governor Sanwo-Olu apprehended a soldier riding against traffic earlier this month. The motorcyclists, reportedly traveling in the wrong direction, were hit by an empty diesel truck that lost control due to a burst tire. Dangote reclaims top position on Forbes Africa’s billionaire list

  Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote has reclaimed his post as the richest person in Africa, according to Forbes Real-Time Billionaires. Last week, South African business tycoon, Johann Ruper, took over the position from Dangote. According to the ranking as of January 8, Dangote’s net worth improved by $10 million to $10.1 billion while Rupert’s net worth as of January 8 was $10 billion, down from $10.7 billion as of January 30, 2023. Dangote, the head of Dangote Group is ranked 191st on the Forbes list, while Rupert is ranked 197th worldwide.

Breaking: Lagos Assembly Passes N2.267trn As Budget For 2024

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday passed a total of N2,267,976,120,869 as the 2024 budget size of the State at a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. The budget representing 58 percent Capital Expenditure and 42 percent Recurrent Expenditure was approved following a unanimous voice vote by all the lawmakers present at the sitting. “A bill for a law to authorise the issuance and appropriation of N952,430,566,998 from the Consolidated Revenue Fund for Recurrent Expenditure and N1,315,545,553,871 from Development Fund for Capital Expenditure thereby totaling a budget size of N2,267,976,120,869 for the year ending 31st December, 2024 be passed into law,” the Speaker had raised on the floor as the budget report was read a third time.   Johann Rupert and family have emerged as the richest man in Africa, dislodging Aliko Dangote as the continent’s wealthiest man in a list released by Forbes Magazine. Nigerian billionaires; Rabiu Abdulsamad and Mike Adenuga have lost their spots in the billionaire rankings released by the financial magazine In the list, the Forbes Daily billionaires ranking platform, which tracks daily changes to the net worth of the most high-net-worth individuals across the world revealed that Aliko Dangote moved down to second position as his wealth decreased from $13.5b in 2023 to $9.5b in the start of 2024. In the list, there were significant declines in the wealth of the billionaires. The wealth of Nigeria’s Mike Adenuga, moved him to the tenth position, while Patrice Motsepe who was in the top ten in 2023 didn’t make the top ten richest men in 2024. President Bola Tinubu has signed the 2024 Appropriation Bill into law in keeping with his avowed commitment to maintaining a timeous, predictable, and efficient budget cycle. President Tinubu assented to the bill at the State House, on Monday, shortly after returning to Abuja from Lagos. Speaking at the signing of the bill, the President assured Nigerians that the implementation of the budget would be efficiently pursued and vigorously monitored, adding: "All the institutional mechanisms shall be held to account in ensuring diligent implementation". "All MDA’s have been directed to take responsibility and provide monthly Budget Performance Reports to the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, which in turn shall ensure the veracity of such.
