Two Motorcyclists Killed in Lagos After Riding Against Traffic Despite Sanwoolu's Stern Warning

A tragic accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on Saturday has claimed the lives of two motorcyclists, raising concerns about the dangers of riding against traffic. The incident comes just weeks after Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his fears about the reckless behavior of some motorcyclists and vowed to crack down on violators.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred near Barracks Bus Stop, the same location where Governor Sanwo-Olu apprehended a soldier riding against traffic earlier this month. The motorcyclists, reportedly traveling in the wrong direction, were hit by an empty diesel truck that lost control due to a burst tire.

One of the motorcyclists died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Two passengers on the motorcycle were also injured in the crash. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene after the accident.

This tragic incident underscores the dangers of riding against traffic and the Governor's call for caution. In his January 2nd visit to the Lagos State University, Ojo, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his frustration with the recklessness of some motorcyclists and passengers, stating, "You people are the ones causing this. Maybe I should arrest two of you and put you in the guardroom."

LASTMA spokesman Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the accident in a statement, reaffirming the Governor's concerns and emphasizing the need for all road users to prioritize safety. "This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of riding against traffic," Mr. Taofiq said. "We urge all motorcyclists and motorists to obey traffic regulations and prioritize their own safety and the safety of others."

The Onireke police division is currently investigating the accident and searching for the truck driver.

The tragic loss of life in this accident highlights the importance of road safety awareness and adherence to traffic regulations. Governor Sanwo-Olu's call for caution remains relevant, urging all road users to exercise responsibility and prioritize safety on the roads.
