Multi-Campus University of Medicine: Lagos State to Establish A Campus in Badagry Division
The Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education in Lagos State, Hon. Tolani Sule, has announced the state government’s plan to establish a campus of the soon-to-be-established Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Badagry Division.
He made this known while addressing the press at a 3-day Seminar/Workshop organized for traditional rulers in Ojo Local Government (Ojo LG, Iba LCDA, and Oto-Awori LCDA).
This new university, an addition to the three existing state universities, will operate a multi-campus system, with one of its campuses located in Badagry.
According to the Commissioner, “The state government has just commenced activities towards establishing a stand-alone University of Medicine.”
“We believe that one of the ways to ensure this institution has a significant impact on our people is by adopting a multi-campus system. I am pleased to inform everyone that Badagry Division will have one of the campuses of the University of Medicine. This is in addition to the two universities already situated in our area.”
The Commissioner emphasized the state government’s commitment to advancing critical infrastructure in the Badagry Division, as well as in other areas of the state.
Hon. Sule commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the various ongoing construction projects in the division, including the Lagos-Badagry Expressway development, the Blue-line rail extension, and the General Hospital under construction at Iyana-Iba, all undertaken with the welfare of the people in mind.
“The government of Gov. Olusola Sanwo-Olu has been ensuring that every part of Lagos State and every segment of the population is considered. This is why you see so much construction going on in our hub,” he stated.
“The development and improvement of the Lagos-Badagry expressway, and the determination to ensure the commencement of the Blue-line extension to Okoko from Mile 2, are some of these efforts. Also, at Iyana-Iba, you will see the new General Hospital under construction, which is set to be one of the best not just in Nigeria but in Africa.”
Speaking on the student loan program, the Commissioner encouraged more students in the state to participate, noting that a larger percentage of current applications come from the northern region of the country.
“Regarding the student loan initiative, we have reached out to traditional rulers, stakeholders, youth clubs, and communities to encourage them to apply for this program. Unfortunately, statistics show that a greater percentage of applications are from the northern part of the country, while the figure for our state is low. This is quite baffling. However, we are actively engaging all layers-traditional leaders, youth groups, and religious organizations-emphasizing the need for our people to take advantage of the student loan scheme.”
