Lagos Pays 500M as Severance Allowance to Past LGs/LCDAs Officials


Lagos State Government has again demonstrated unwavering commitment to boost improved welfare of its’ citizenry with the payment of N489,019,913.95 (Four Hundred and Eighty-Nine Million, Nineteen Thousand, Nine Hundred and Thirteen Naira, Ninety-Five Kobo) only as severance allowance for past Political Office-Holders and Functionaries who were in office after the creation of the 37 (Thirty-Seven) Local Councils in Lagos State between the year 2004-2007. 

The payment was made today at the conference room of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Alausa Ikeja.


The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Community Affairs, Honorable Bolaji Kayode Robert presented individual cheques to a total of 715 (Seven Hundred and Fifteen) beneficiaries whose severance allowances were not paid till their tenure lapsed in the year 2007 owing to the withheld federal allocations due to the Lagos State Local Councils by the Federal Government. 

Honorable Robert commended the State Government and the Fifty-Seven Executive Chairmen of the Local Councils for their magnanimity and approval to offset the outstanding severance allowance due to the past local councils' officials for their contributions to the development of the grassroots across the State.  



"Today, represents a dream which over a period of time has now come true."

He praised the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Jagagban of Borgu and APC Presidential Flagbearer in the forthcoming General Elections by 2003 for the creation of the 37 (Thirty-Seven) Local Council Development Areas and his sagacity in ensuring their existence till date, adding that Asiwaju Tinubu deserves "a big commendation from all of us."


He also commended the past council officials for their perseverance, sacrifices and commitments maintained during the trying times, disclosing further that the payment of the severance allowance was a climax of an intense struggle that began in the year 2004. 


He assured all residents of Lagos State and Nigerians alike to stake their confidence in the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidates in the forthcoming general elections so that the promise of "Renewed Hope" by 2023 can be to the benefit of the Country. 


Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa welcomed the beneficiaries and charged them to continue to support the State Government for appreciating their immense efforts and had ensured that their severance allowance was paid.


Also, at the event, the Permanent Secretary and Accountant-General, Dr. Abiodun Muritala expressed joy that the second and final tranche of the payment was approved and the beneficiaries would go home with their full payment. 


In the same vein, Permanent Secretary and Auditor-General for Local Government, Mr. Obafemi Ogunlana commended the State Government for making the funds available to the beneficiaries. 


In response, the Coordinator-General of the past Council Officials, Honourable Aviokirhie Ameen Mohammed commended the State Government for the payment and admonished his colleagues to support the victory of all the APC candidates as a duty they owe the political party in the 2023 general elections.
