TOLANI SULE: AFRICA’S EDUCATION FUTURE LIES IN CULTURE, VALUES, AND HUMANITY—NOT JUST TECHNOLOGY

Tolani Sule, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Lagos State.

“The future of education in Africa will be defined not just by technology, but by how deeply we anchor learning in our culture, our values, and our shared humanity.”

It was an honour to serve as Special Guest of Honour at the 23rd Annual Lecture and 18th Annual Post-Doctoral Award Ceremony of the Fafunwa Educational Foundation (FEF), a respected NGO founded in 1995 in honour of the late Emeritus Professor Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa, CON, NNOM, Nigeria’s former Minister of Education and Youth Development and the first Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission.

Themed “Re-inventing Teacher Education for Culturally Rooted and AI-Enhanced Pedagogy in Nigeria,” the event reflected FEF’s longstanding commitment to advancing educational research, awarding scholarships to outstanding students of education, fostering innovation, and promoting active dialogue between professional educators and policy makers.

In my address, I highlighted our administration’s unwavering drive under the visionary leadership of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to reform tertiary education holistically in Lagos State. I noted that teacher education is being redefined, not only in curriculum content, but in delivery approach, educator orientation, and mindset. I referenced the strategic transmutation of key institutions, LASUED, LASUSTECH, and the soon-to-be-launched University of Medicine and Health Sciences, as intentional investments to enhance teacher preparation, deepen educational research, and build a robust workforce for a technology-driven and health-conscious future.

I commended the Board of Trustees and Academic Committee of the Foundation for sustaining this impactful platform and assured them of our government’s openness to meaningful collaboration. I also charged the awardees to recognize the honour bestowed upon them as a call to responsibility, to carry forward the torch of excellence into classrooms, policy rooms, and into the hearts and minds of learners across Nigeria and beyond.
