NPC Lagos Hosts UNICEF Child Protection Team

The Lagos State Office of the National Population Commission (NPC) on Friday hosted a delegation from the UNICEF Child Protection Unit, led by Dr. Ibrahim Sesay, Head of Party, UNICEF Global Child Protection Unit, UN Building, Abuja. He was accompanied by Mr. Denise Onoise, Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF Lagos Field Office.

The visit aimed to engage the Honourable Federal Commissioner representing Lagos State, Barrister (Mrs.) Saidat Olayinka Oladunjoye, on the need to streamline the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders — NPC, ALGON, and NIMC — in line with the Tripartite Compact Agreement signed by the three agencies.

Discussions during the meeting were robust, covering the historical context, defined responsibilities, and areas of collaboration among the stakeholders. In his presentation, Dr. Sesay reaffirmed that the National Population Commission (NPC) continues to maintain the lead role in the architecture of birth registration across Nigeria, and particularly in Lagos State.

Responding, the Honourable Federal Commissioner, Barrister (Mrs.) Saidat Olayinka Oladunjoye, expressed her satisfaction with the clarity provided by the UNICEF team, noting that “my initial fears have been clearly allayed after listening to the presentation.” She further assured that the Lagos State office will hit the ground running immediately to ensure that the targets for birth registration of children under one year are not only met but surpassed.

Also in attendance were the State Director, Mr. Bamidele Sadiku, who briefed the team on operational challenges within the Lagos office, and the Head of CRVS Department, Mrs. Mabel Okoye.
